Frequently Asked Questions:

How To Use The SurePlunge
Okay, so how do I properly use the SurePlunge?

First of all read the instructions carefully before attempting to use it.  Then, practice on a clean toilet prior to needing it for an actual clog situation.

The silicon adapter (BOOT) – with its extended flaps – will ensure an tight seal when the unit is inserted, and then hold at about a 45º angle downwards… prior to pressing the button (TRIGGER).

Make sure you push the silicone adapter (BOOT) fully into the toilet – until you can push no more – then slightly lean the handle (WAND) downwards at about a 45º angle. You will then have an tight seal.  Hold firmly with both hands to avoid any “kick-back”.  Failure to do this could result in unpleasant splash-back!

Unless the toilet bowl is full to the rim, you don’t need to try and siphon any of the existing water out.   A water filled environment (1/2 to 3/4) helps the unblocking process significantly … SurePlunge uses the water in the bowl to forcefully push the blockage out of the way with its compressed CO2 gas.

Easy as 1-2-3:
  1. Using both hands, insert the SurePlunge fully into the toilet.
** Insert as far as it will go into the toilet's outlet drain.

  2. Angle it downwards at about a 45º angle. This makes the air-tight seal.
** The silicone BOOT’s extended flaps will also help prevent splash-back.

  3. Press button (trigger) to release CO2 gas.
**Hold with both hands, expect a slight “kick-back”.

Each time you use SurePlunge you will need to insert a single-use CO2 cartridge.  Simply open the top of the unit, place the cartridge and screw the inlet cap back on.  This action punctures the cylinder and the SurePlunge is then ready for use.

Using The SurePlunge On My Toilet
Is it good for those newer, low-flow toilets?
The SurePlunge is a Hero when it comes to the newer low-flow type of toilets.

Low-flow water flushes are often the root cause of poor toilet performance.

The SurePlunge will push right through where that low-flow toilet's flush did not.
Does it only work on complete blockages?
No. The SurePlunge is fantastic on painfully slow draining toilets too.

Sometimes the toilet itself might become semi-clogged without your knowledge.  SurePlunge can help solve those annoying issues too when water flushed takes ages to drain away properly.
What about cleaning the SurePlunge after use?
The silicon adapter (BOOT) – with its extended flaps – are made with a very easy-to-clean silicone.

After the clog is cleared, just simply rinse the BOOT in the clean water as the toilet bowl is refilled.  Repeat until completely clean.

Dry off any excess water from the BOOT with toilet paper (if necessary) before placing it back into the Decor Stand. Usually, it will drip-dry very quickly as it is made of high quality, non-stick silicone.
Do I need to ensure a tight seal when the SurePlunge is inserted?
Yes.  You need to follow the instructions carefully and practice first to get the hang of it.

We highly recommend that you practice first on a clean toilet prior to needing the SurePlunge in an actual clog situation.

The silicon adapter (BOOT) – with its extended flaps – will help ensure a tight seal when the unit is inserted and then held downwards at about a 45º angle .

Make sure you push the BOOT fully into the toliet – until you can push no further – slightly lean the WAND downwards at about a 45º angle.  You will then have an tight seal.  Failure to do this could result in unpleasant splash-back!

Note: Unless the toilet bowl is on the brink of overflowing, do not siphon any of the existing water out – best results are a 1/2 to 3/4 water filled bowl which helps the unblocking process significantly … SurePlunge uses the water in the bowl to forcefully push the blockage out of the way with its compressed CO2 gas release.
What if it is still clogged after using the SurePlunge?
The SurePlunge is actually very effective with the most stubborn blockages.

While it is not very common, for those unusually stubborn clogs, you may need to use more than one CO2 cartridge.  Also, make sure that you're inserting the BOOT into the toilet outlet as far as it will go -- hold extra tight to eliminate any kickback when releasing the gas.

Usually, if after using the SurePlunge several times (3-4) and the blockage is still apparent, the most likely problem is that the blockage is a “foreign object” … something too large that it cannot pass through the toilet “S” bend.

If there is an object that is too large or too hard to pass through the toilet “S” bend, it will need to be “snaked” out backwards.  It will not pass through those bends.

Also, while even more rare but possible, you may have physical damage elsewhere that lies within the piping fixture or outside drain and no amount of plunging will resolve the issue.
What About Those CO2 Gas Cylinders
Is the CO2 gas harmful?
No.  This is the exact same type of CO2 gas that is used to carbonate soft drinks (e.g. Coke, Pepsi, etc.)

Other products use similar CO2 gas cylinders, such as the Soda Stream and beer Growlers.  Furthermore, the SurePlunge CO2 cylinder hold only 8g which is about 4 liters of fully expanded gas - not very much actually.
Is it only the one blast per CO2 cartridge?
Yes.  The CO2 cylinder is a single-use cartridge.

The SurePlunge has been specifically engineered for this sized CO2 cylinder and for that exact amount of pressurized gas.

After pressing the TRIGGER (button) all of the CO2 gas is released and the cylinder is empty and can be recycled accordingly.  They cannot be used again, nor refilled.
What happens if the CO2 cylinder doesn't release the gas?

Under normal operations, pressing the button (TRIGGER) releases all of the CO2 gas in one blast. - If your SurePlunge does not release the gas properly, please contact us for assistance.  Use the website contact form, or email us at help@SurePlunge.com

There could be several reasons for this occurrence:

  1. Using the wrong sized CO2.  "Generic" or non-SurePlunge brand cylinders might not work properly or consistently.  Non-SurePlunge brand cylinders are normally "silver" in color and are only 64mm long. They are too short.
  2. Another possible reason could be that the cylinder could be defective (rare).
  3. Lastly, the TRIGGER (button) spring could be sticking.   Try some WD40 or similar lubricant.
We recommend that you remove the cylinder after each use and do not leave it in the SurePlunge, as this helps the "condensation"from firing the co2 gas to dry out quicker.

Either way, PLEASE reach out to us and let us help determine the best course of action... including a possible replacement.

Will the pressure damage my porcelain toilet, wax seal, or main pipes?
No.  The SurePlunge has been specifically engineered and designed to deliver the correct amount of pressure.  It has been tested and used on literally millions of clogs World-Wide in a wide variety of situations.

Under normal situations – i.e. properly installed toilet systems – the SurePlunge will not cause any harm or damage.

However, if you suspect that you have a damaged toilet or damaged piping you should call a professional plumber to inspect and/or repair BEFORE using the SurePlunge.

The SurePlunge uses a small CO2 gas cylinder and most of the pressure is in the initial release – about 1/2 – 1 foot and dissipates very quickly.

The CO2 cylinder is only 8 grams (10ml) of gas and just isn’t strong enough to break or damage a porcelain toilet, or damage the wax seal between the toilet/flooring/main piping.  Additionally, the 3″ piping found after the the toilet/wax seal is a very large dead-air cavity and the small amount of 8g CO2 gas expands easily into this space.
How can I obtain additional replacement CO2 cylinders?
The correct size CO2 cartridges can be purchased on the SurePlunge website or with one of our valued retailers (Amazon, eBay, Wayfair, BedBathBeyond, etc.)
